Our Mission

To educate underserved youth with personal, academic and professional development experiences that increase participation in higher education and access to fulfilling science careers

Our Vision

To transform youth into prepared, confident and successful professionals who contribute to science and their communities.

Our Core Focus

Since 1993, Biotech Partners has focused on helping youth achieve their goals. We focus on training youth for technical positions in bioscience, career advancement and continued education.

An Organization Dedicated to its Students

Established in 1993 as part of a development agreement between Bayer HealthCare and the City of Berkeley, Biotech Partners is an independent non- profit organization which focuses on helping students underrepresented in the field of biotechnology attain personal, academic, and professional development experiences through in-classroom instruction and paid internships within the biotech and health industries.

Our nine-member staff and seven-member board of directors is comprised of professionals with substantial leadership experience in education, bioscience, labor, health and community development, and human resources. An annual review by teachers, industry representatives and staff guides curriculum and program development to ensure that the training is aligned with trends in biotechnology and regional workforce development.

Biotech Partners receives funding support from individuals, corporations, foundations and government sources. The organization has been featured in The New York Times, on NBC Nightly News and in numerous reports on urban youth education and workforce development.

An Education that Makes a Difference

Biotech Partners’ Biotech Academy serves approximately 120 students from our legacy and expansion sites of Berkeley High, Oakland Tech, Antioch High, and South San Francisco High Schools, respectively.

After graduating from high school, students are eligible for the Community College / Co-op Program. Co-op students work a year-long biotech job while taking courses at the Peralta Community College District.

Biotech Partners holds a 100% graduation rate and has placed over 3,100 students in biotechnical internships.

“With the training I received from biotech partners, I now have the skills and professional development to compete in the marketplace—I have a career in the life science field.”

-Nia Assata, 2014 Academy Graduate

“This Biotech program has pushed me to places that I never thought could happen... I know for sure if I had not been accepted into the biotech program I would be locked up in juvenile hall or be 6 feet under some dirt.”

-2007 Biotech Academy Graduate
